Flexible seating is becoming more popular in school and work environments because it allows the opportunity to maintain posture and good back health by moving more often. Many of my students grew accustomed to a more comfortable work environment when working from home and are finding it hard to sit in traditional desks now that we are back to in-person learning. A range of styles of seating will allow students several options for group seating that will be more comfortable and increase engagement. Research shows that flexible seating options are beneficial for students' ability to focus and engage more closely with their work and peers when they have options. More comfortable group seating also allows my students to have a more relaxed environment and puts them at ease when working in groups, especially when engaging in speaking and listening activities with their peers. Students deserve a more engaging and inviting environment.
