Part of the difficulty for teens living in this pandemic is a sense of isolation and disconnection. The projects these two book sets will enable will help to counter that disconnection. Maus will help see how much worse life can be but also how one can survive and even flourish even if the pain lingers. Brave New World will help students see an imagined world where pleasure reigns but a meaningful connection between humans has evaporated, and to then see how profound a resources connection is as it begins to grow in the story. The study of these books will show students a world they know well, a world of despair, but then as we continue our study they will see a light emerge in these texts showing them hope and the possibility of happiness. These are not easy days we live in, but experiencing the world through literature can help students and all of us see that we are stronger than we thought and closer to joy than we realized.
