Utah's Earth and Space Science core standard 2.6 specifically asks students to look at design applications to structures and assess their resistance to natural hazards. In Salt Lake, our biggest hazard is an earthquake on the Wasatch Fault. This shake table could allow me to do an activity where students can actually build and test buildings and see what works and what does not. Doing a real-life shake test would be the best way for them to see earthquakes in action-before it actually hits! I also have plans to divvy construction materials with limitations on budget and regulations, so they can see how those affect earthquake survivability.
