Artists need a variety of art materials to experiment with their creative ideas. When supplies are limited, students are limited in the expression of their art ideas. The students in my classroom only have the opportunity to experiment with different art mediums while here at school. Using a variety of art mediums increases a student's creative art expressions. A variety of art mediums is like the way an increased vocabulary improves reading skills. Students who have a positive experience with a variety of art mediums become more excited to expand their creative ideas. One idea can lead to many new forms of creativity and expression. In particular, learning about colors and experimenting with color formations expands their art horizons. Sharing their successes with each other builds self-esteem and collaboration skills. Students who may not excel in other academic areas find self-confidence in their artwork. They see that they can make achievements and gain positive recognition. They learn to trust their own initiative.
