Finding research supporting the Science of Reading is key in teaching children to read. Ensuring students receive targeted interventions in reading skills so they can decode words, improve accuracy, increase comprehension, and become more fluent readers is vital in teaching language arts. The resources I've requested will help me support students who might be struggling with these skills. The resources will be used by me and other teachers in our school in whole group instruction as well as small group interventions including working with ELL students. For example, the alphabetic letter tiles, magnetic letters with magnet boards, and the ruled set of white boards will help students manipulate the letters, form words, and write those letters and words on the lined white boards. These are important steps in helping students be able to retain letters, sounds, and how we blend those sounds to make words. All of the materials are research-based and proven to be effective tools in helping students learn to read. Understanding How We Learn, Make it Stick- The Science of Successful Learning, Language at the Speed of Sight, How we Read, Why so Many Can't, and What can be Done; & Why Johnny Can't Read & What You Can Do About It are resources which provide activities I can do with the students. For instance, a group of students struggling with a certain phonics pattern might benefit from a strategy from these books to help that student learn that pattern. Phonological awareness (hearing sounds in words) is one of the top predictors of reading success. Road to the Code will give me strategies for helping students improve their phonemic awareness. Reading Comprehension Blueprint & Beginning to Read contain strategies in teaching students about print and improving their reading.
