Reading gives students the opportunity to live in another person's shoes and experience life through someone else's eyes. When we read novels as a class, we have deep discussions about how we can relate to the characters and how we can learn from their experiences. Island of the Blue Dolphins and A Long Walk to Water are about teenagers who live through difficult experiences and succeed. Reading these books will teach students that they can do hard things. Island of the Blue Dolphins is an important historical fiction novel. A Long Walk to Water is non-fiction and takes place in Sudan.
