Every year our 8th graders form book clubs about neurodiversity and mental health. Every year they have really valuable conversations about how to care for their mental health, how they can destigmatize mental illness, how the differences between us aren't bad, and how we can change the world to be more accommodating and supportive of those differences. These novels will help us deepen conversations around mental health and neurodiversity. The graphic novels will pull in my most reluctant and struggling readers. Manga is a big hit at my school and my students will be excited to have new options to read. The yarn will be used during my enrichment activity as a way to build community and incentivize students to keep their grades up. I have a core group of students who come in every week to make hats and pom-poms. It's a great way for them to wind down in the middle of the day.
