The materials I have chosen for my classroom are intended to make a “calming corner”. It is designed to help students transition from an uncontrolled or high emotional state to a calm, collective one. More often than not, changing one’s environment helps to change one’s emotions and mindset. The calming corner is a peaceful distraction from desk work where a student may go to take a break and recover from a high emotional outburst. Replacing a high emotional child also allows the rest of the class to continue learning while the upset child is in recovery.
