All too often, my students are thought incapable of engaging with literature. As students with special needs, they rarely are given an opportunity to discover their passions in an academic environment. My kids love the bleakness and complexity of apocalyptic fiction, and have showed an incredible capacity to analyze and take apart these texts. I want to encourage this further. My students attend a high school in Pasadena, a Title 1 school that has only recently begun to pull itself up out of a cycle of low expectations and district neglect.
