After enduring a year and a half of distance learning and social turmoil, my middle school students have returned with tremendous anxiety about their purpose and place in a rapidly changing world. They seek role models who reflect their search for a new identity. While they are avid and insightful readers who connect to the world through literature, they have requested more diverse authors as our current resources are outdated and inadequate. By funding this project my students will receive class sets of books from diverse authors, whose characters represent multiple ways to overcome adversity with courage and perseverance. These additions to my students' literary resources, will enhance their learning and develop their confidence as they discover many ways to become engaged citizens, and future leaders.
