Our first grade team are working to create units of learning that give students the opportunities to explore a concept in their own way, rather than just teaching at them. They are given phenomena, or questions, that they can relate to, and work together to explore ways to help solve a problem. We are currently taking a professional development course that provides ways to integrate the arts into more subjects in our classroom. We have planned units of study that integrate art projects in ways that are authentic and tie directly to a profession that relates to the concept being taught. We hope students will deepen their understanding of animals and their needs by taking the time to sculpt their features and recognizing how each habitat requires different features. We want to use different mediums to explore ways of representing different animal habitats. We will explore our neighborhoods, and use existing maps to create our own.
