Working together on the rug is important for first graders. When we get on the floor and work together on becoming better readers and mathematicians, everyone wins. Having an easel at the rug for lessons, anchor charts and working on phonics and math together would help my first graders prepare to be amazing second graders. I have no whiteboard to work with the students on the rug, or to hang anchor charts on. Our individual whiteboards are old and falling apart. All of these things would help us focus on phonics and math together.
