Students continue their exploration of American History themes and lessons through my classroom library, which needs some more books. I noticed the graphic novels and modernized stories on my shelves are the first to be snatched up during class reading time. They are particularly helpful for reluctant readers. I’ve also focused on selecting books that highlight the diversity of people who played roles in our country’s history. I’ve had many great conversations this year with students who enjoyed the unusual and fun stories in these books. History Smashers lets them challenge some of the simplified stories they’ve heard since elementary school. And there’s a waiting list for the popular “Hazardous Tales,” which add adventure to history. Students can also check out the books to take home, so having multiple copies on hand has been important.
