The use of calming tools helps students regulate their emotions so they can make space to learn when in class. There are various sensory and calming tools that have been chosen such as lamps, gratitude journals, coloring books, kinetic sand, and more to stock a wellness room in a high school. These tools can help students pay attention and be mindful of their surroundings. Using their senses helps them be present and manage overwhelming feelings. Creating this wellness space for students will allow them to learn when they need a break so they can return to the classroom better able to thrive. It also teaches valuable life skills on how to better cope with normal day-to-day experiences. The kinetic sand and therapy putty give students the ability to use their hands to cope when they feel overwhelmed. The stress-reducing sensory toys serve a similar purpose. The lamps help set a softer lighting environment to support the calm environment. To cater to a variety of students with a variety of interests, multiple options have been selected to meet their calming needs.
