Our Pre-K classroom is a literacy-rich environment. We have a library full of different types of books, posters created by the teacher and students, alphabet charts, word walls, anchor charts. We also have various tools like pencils, crayons, markers, chalk, paint sticks, etc... to create artwork and to use during "table" work at our literacy centers. The materials in this proposal will be used to create a listening center in our classroom so my students will have another resource to encourage and engage them in more literacy activities. Even though I read to my students daily, a listening center will provide my students with a resource to choose the books that interest them. It will also give them the opportunity to listen to the story by themselves instead of waiting for someone else to read it to them. This will give my students the feeling of independence, which will create an even more love of reading. Young children enjoy being independent! They take pride in themselves when a task can be accomplished without an adult's help.
