Covid kept us on-line and on computers, both of which offer theoretical questions and answers, but takes away opportunities for hands-on, critical thinking and analysis projects to solve real-world problems. Forensic anthropology asks students to investigate evidence and create conclusions. In my survey of anthropology class, we spend a long unit on forensic anthropology, but without physical examples of skulls, long bones, and crime scene evidence, we cannot replicate hands-on and real-world scenarios. Using various skulls (male versus female), bones (long bones like femurs to determine height), and crime scenes (blood splatter, finger prints, damage to skulls) allows students to make observations, apply research skills, and finally come to a conclusion through small group discussions. This unit is very intriguing to students which offers easy buy-in and critical thinking and analysis practice, a vital component to educating life-long learners.
