With the drop in AP course enrollment, I began searching for fun and engaging lessons that helped students feel relief even with all of the stress and anxiety in the world right now. A unit of study in AP U.S. History revolves around the Gilded Age and Populism. The Wizard of Oz is a great allegory for Populism. Since doing this project, I have seen a massive increase in understanding of the time period and topic. With these materials, I will be able to create the ultimate Populism Play that engages students and provides props and costumes for each of my students. We have two separate AP teachers at my school, as well as others who have used my script for their classes. By having a class set of costumes, I could share these costumes with other teachers who are also interested in the activity.
