As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic school closures, our junior high teachers are seeing a decline in our students' ability to read and write at grade level. There have always been struggling readers and writers, but the numbers have increased over the last two years. I had a markerboard kidney table in the classroom at the school I taught at a few years ago. I loved it! The students loved it! The "table" was a safe and fun place to learn. Being able to express your thinking, try out a new word, work on decoding, or just make a doodle with a marker on the surface in front of you brings a new dimension and excitement to learning. I teach English to 6th graders, Reading Strategies, and remedial reading classes to 7th and 8th graders. A markerboard kidney table will give us a place to meet as a group and creatively learn.
