Research shows that having a student set a goal and then work towards it is motivating. It also teaches an important life skill. Rather than always give the students something to eat (like a sugary treat), I prefer to give them a flexible seating option that keeps them working and enjoying our class. Students who struggle with focus, like students who have ADHD or ADD, can really benefit from a seating option that keeps them working. This reward for hard work and staying on task helps all students in our class to stay engaged.
