The graphic novels will be used in my English 11 class as they learn to cite strong textual evidence and analyze how an author’s choices contribute to its overall structure and meaning as well as its aesthetic impact. Our students tend to devour graphic novels when given the choice, so formally teaching graphic novels in class is a great way to bridge the gap between casual reading and formal analytical skills. My AP students are required to read multiple nonfiction books of their choice throughout the year, so these nonfiction texts will offer more options for students to find one that authentically interests them.
