In the past 2 years as we've dealt with the various implications of COVID, I've noticed a backslide in learning and retention in my kindergarten students. Understandably, the youngest learners in the household do not receive the priority of parent time and attention when learning moves to online delivery. Because of this trend and concern, I wanted to create a project for my classroom that could make the biggest impact on student reading skills. The decodable readers will help me teach my students to be attentive to print, and give them material that makes them feel successful. I'm also excited to use the pop it toys in small groups so students can segment sounds in words and 'pop' each sound they hear. Also, because cooperative play is an essential skill, and critical for kindergarteners, I've added MagnaTiles and connecting blocks. In reading and in play, I want to bring my students together and help them succeed during this unprecedented time.
