The flexibility and tactility of paper books open up a lot of opportunities. Students can mark pages with post-its, take notes on their computers or their notebooks, easily point to a quote, and generally appreciate the undistracted experience of book learning. These books will be around for a while. With hardcover copies, we'll be able to teach Long Way Down to multiple classes every year. They can even be shared between ninth-grade teachers who might teach the same unit at different times. This is an investment in students' learning experience long term. The novel itself is relatively new, and its themes will have an impact for a long time to come.
