Music students have had to pivot and redefine what it means to receive a music education during various lockdowns, quarantines, virtual learning events, and other curveballs thrown by COVID-19. Many of them have started to explore electronic music production and are learning that it is an art form that allows them to express themselves in new ways, and it can be done more easily from home than practicing their instruments. Students can put on their headphones, isolate from their surroundings, and explore sound and function without being concerned about who can hear them and what those people will think of their product. It truly makes creating music a safe activity and allows the student to control when to share their art publicly. Since so many traditional public school band students are in a position where they can't always practice music in their home settings, but they still want to "do" music; this opens up additional avenues for them to explore. Having access to 25 key MIDI controllers and an Ableton Live controller will allow students to explore digital production on a much deeper level and allow them move through the artistic process of music making without the roadblocks presented by technology.
