Teens have so many things tugging for their attention, and reading gets pushed off their to-do lists. An alarming amount of students claim proudly they have never read a book or share how they've cheated on book reports. Having high-interest books in my classroom library can help me connect them to books in the place where we are forging relationships. High-level readers who don't love reading can find books that do interest them. Struggling readers can find books that they can and want to read on their own. Reluctant readers can't help but engage in high-interest titles that presented as one of a few options right then. All teens can find books they enjoy reading, and then be changed for life! Our goals are to improve their reading skills and help them become lifelong readers. Getting them started is the trickiest part of that, so having a wide variety of book choices right in the classroom library is a great step in the right direction.
