Covid-19 has affected many of my students reading abilities. They have come with lower reading and comprehension levels. With no one making them read and teaching them the necessary skills to progress, they have fallen behind and struggle to read on grade level. I have seen them feel frustrated and overwhelmed. This has led to giving up and a lack of conviction. I hope by having easily accessed classroom novels that are high interest, the reading gap will be closed. Daily reading is the key to student success. 15 minutes of reading a day is essential to students growth. We only get to see students 2-3 times a week. This is not often enough to get those 15 minutes. Through high interest novels and reading centered teaching, I hope to help these students feel successful and find the joys of reading.
