We run a full aquaponics greenhouse that I have built from discarded materials. Every year we grow fish from fry and create several working ecosystems that the student must maintain. We grow catfish and tilapia for consumption and we also grow tomatoes, cilantro, mint, jalapenos, bell peppers, cilantro in aquaponic beds. We cook with these every friday showing the kids how to prepare healthy meals from scratch. I have been doing this for the last 4 years. Most of my equipment has been secondhand things I bought myself and is starting to malfunction (greenhouse tarp, grow lights, pumps, hoses, etc). My students (special ed, behavorial with heavy trauma) really benefit from the hands on approach to science that aquaponics provides. Since having children of my own, I can no longer fund all of it out of pocket.
