My first grade students have gone through a lot in the short amount of time they have been in a formal education setting. They have gone back and forth from learning at home to learning at school, spend significant amounts of time absent when exposed to COVID-19, and have had to deal with isolation from their friends. They haven't had the chance to socialize or learn how to be in school like other students have, and need support in that area. Every day, I have students who go through significant emotional outbursts triggered by the overwhelming sensations that come with being in a classroom full of other students going through similar emotional issues. Different seating options like the premium wobble chairs, portable reclining seats, balance ball seats, and floor cushions that I have requested give students the chance to fidget when they're anxious without interrupting their schoolwork and learning. With flexible seating, students will have a way to soften the experience and therefore increase the amount of learning and working in the classroom and reduce the amount of time spent on simply calming down enough to do work.
