Reading and writing are two of the greatest areas of concern for this rising generation. Students are often tasked at a young age with reading materials/books they are not interested in and then given high stakes tests/quizzes/projects about those books. This strategy of teaching reading within our public school systems has been proven to crush students joy in reading before it even gets started. Are there benefits to reading "the classics?" Of course there are, but they way we tend to go about it is doing more harm than good. Through book clubs in my classroom, I am aiming to provide my students with more relevant/modern texts where they can find themselves in the stories and engage with the characters. Book clubs allow for groups of students to read the same book and have the opportunity to have meaningful/purposeful discussions about characters, themes, and more. Book clubs not only allow students to become stronger readers, they also help students develop as writers. The more a student sees strong writing, the better off they will be with their own writing.
