Oral communication is the basis for literacy. Children who have speech and language delays are at greatest risk for challenges in reading. In order to get the most from our limited resources we must start early. In preschool we teach communication through play. The therapy materials are ones that are engaging and interactive. A Peppa Pig playground might just look like a toy but in therapy that toy is used to help children learn to label nouns and verbs, to combine words together, to request objects and actions, answer questions, comment on what they see and eventually to create an oral story that later becomes written language. A game of Elefun can be a motivational tool to keep working on a speech sound so that others can understand. It can help students learn to request, take turns, label and question. The materials on this list appear to be just toys on the surface but each one offers a range of valuable tools for the purpose of communication with a young child. Their language is through play. Public school resources are limited and especially so in preschool. In Utah it is funded mostly through grants. Over the past two years we have noticed that children are coming in to school with lower and lower communication skills. Young children learn by watching and imitating. When it comes to words and expression, their abilities to learn have been 'masked'. Masks, although critical for safety, significantly limit a young child's ability to hear, to understand, to imitate words, to see how words are pronounced and to see facial expression. We have a lot of making up to do. The children that are served in preschool have a greater chance of being released from special education earlier in their school career. It's time to play!
