My students this year were in first grade when the Covid shutdowns happened. They lost about 3 months of crucial foundational reading and math skills. We are still seeing the effects of it in third grade with many students still struggling with basic reading skills. In order to improve their skills, students need to read, and students are more likely to read when they have books that engage them and are on their level. The books I have chosen are very popular among students and will help them get excited about reading. They can read these books during silent reading time and when they finish classwork. My hope is that these books will grab my students' interest and they will want to continue reading more and more, which over time will increase reading confidence and skills. We also have some great computer programs that fill in holes for literacy and math. These programs work best when students are wearing headphones. I don't have a class set of headphones and many of my students aren't able to bring headphones from home. Some of these programs read words and phrases to the students to help them with phonological awareness, but it is difficult for them to hear the words and phrases correctly when they don't have headphones. By having headphones students will be able to hear better and focus better because there will be less noise.
