In order to bridge the gap created by the COVID-19 pandemic, our school is being trained in LETRS. It is a philosophy based on brain research that proves that students need a solid phonics base in order to read well. As teachers, we are trying to implement the strategies in our training. We have seen some progress already, from introducing the strategies we have been taught although our supplies are limited. In alignment with the science of reading, we are restructuring our small group instruction to include phonics based materials. Additional supplies such as white boards, magnets, phonics based games, and decodable readers are critical to the needs of our K-2 teachers and students. These supplies will be used during small group reading intervention where we will use data to target specific skills for individual students. This systematic instruction will help us bridge the gap that we are seeing with our students.
