This grant will provide me with the resources and tools I need to help students develop their coping skills. Life is hard and students need self-regulation skills now more than ever. Covid-19 has been detrimental to their social and emotional health. As a counselor, I teach my students the skills they need to develop grit. The printer will be for growth mindset posters, I Messages handouts, breathing exercises cards, and positive messages that students can keep taped on their desks. They can refer to them when they feel discouraged. The eye massager, bubble tube, and other sensory tools are for students to use when they feel overwhelmed and need a short and safe break from class. They can come into my “Zen Zone” and choose which coping skill to use. We’ll talk about how they felt before they came in, and how they feel when they leave. The sensory tools I requested engage the students 5 senses, which is practicing mindfulness. When my students recognize how to focus on what they see, hear, taste, touch, and smell in the moment, it grounds their negative thoughts and calms them down. Then we can make a plan to problem solve. This pattern of regulating their emotions in the moment and problem solving when they are calm will benefit them in every way!
