As a counselor, I work with all K-5th students in our school to build social and emotional skills. Each week when I visit the classrooms, I help students learn and practice skills that build confidence and resilience. These qualities are essential to being persistent and successful in life, especially with setbacks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. To ensure that my counseling lessons are engaging and effective, I depend upon access to materials that can be used to help students connect with the content. The social and emotional learning resources requested will boost engagement and create a more powerful learning experience for these students. I plan to create activity boxes for students to use during my lessons. One of these activities will be "STEM-pathy Kits"--in which students use LEGO sets and challenge cards to develop creative solutions to real life problems. I will also use social and emotional prompts and pictures to help students create meaningful discussions in small groups to strengthen relationships and deepen understanding. Other games will be used in these classes and in my small group counseling to support skill development of friendship, resilience, and emotional management.
