Students in our district are drawn to new, colorful books such as fictional series and graphic novels. In our school, we are working on updating our literacy center with high interest topics and books in order to spark a love of literacy and books within our students. Many of our students are reading below grade level which in turn makes them resistant to reading and literacy. However, when they are shown a new interesting book or a series of graphic novels, they are interested and want to read or listen to another read it to them. These books are less intimidating than books in their classroom in which they are immediately discouraged by the difficult text. If a student believes that reading is fun and can pick up a book that sparks their interest, we are beginning to bridge the gap between our reluctant readers.
