When a child is overwhelmed with anger, sadness, or anxiety, sharing these concerns with a caring adult (psychologist) can be very helpful. During individual or small group sessions, I work to validate a child's emotions rather than trying to eliminate or solve problems. While sitting on my school office rug and playing with puzzles, simple games, and construction materials, such as magnet tiles, a child does not have to look at me, an adult woman, and often is able to more easily share concerns. Talk therapy with children works best when the child is able to enjoy an activity while communicating.
