Students need quality recording equipment so when they listen back to what they played, it gives students an accurate representation of what they really sound like. This practice of recording, listening, assessing, correcting mistakes, and trying again builds technical music skills, as well as problem solving, grit, and creativity. With this equipment, students will be able to self-assess their playing, allowing for independent learning and growth. We often “think” we are using techniques for expression and musicality, but sometimes it doesn’t transfer to the listener. We want to create shared moments of empathy through music. In order to achieve that, we have to know what we sound like from the listener’s perspective.
