As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of my students are reading far below a 3rd grade-level. In fact, almost a third of my class is reading on a Kindergarten/1st grade level and struggles with even sounding out words. I have had to completely change my curriculum, just so these students can feel successful. In addition, I have found that many of my students are missing key phonological skills and phonemic awareness. This does not only include my low students, I have found that many of my high achieving students are also lacking here. I believe that many of my students are far behind because of the impact COVID-19 had on their education. Each of these students lost almost a third of their first grade school year to online school, and then also half of their second grade year because the school day was shortened. Teaching reading over a computer was not affective, and many parents simply could not help their students, so education became insignificant. Since phonics is so important to struggling readers, I have found that doing word work is vital. I am asking for a set of magnetic letter tiles for each of my students, so we can do word work as a class. Normally we could share these items, but because of COVID-19, each child needs his/her own set. I am also asking for individual whiteboards, so I can check individual progress as I teach whole group. The lined whiteboards and tabletop boards will be used for guided reading instruction for phonics and spelling. I am also asking for a variety of books, so I can encourage my students to read more. I've picked books of various reading levels and interests, since my students are so diverse. I want each of them to love reading!
