The students in my class are bright and curious learners; however, the ongoing pandemic has taken its toll on their academics and critical thinking abilities. COVID-19 shut down our school at a crucial period of reading development and phonics instruction. This created students who need more support academically and emotionally. COVID-19 changed the lives of my students almost overnight and we will be dealing with the ramifications of these events for years to come. The materials and resources I am requesting will help me fill gaps in my students' academic progress, advance their critical thinking skills, and provide opportunities for them to learn effective tools for navigating emotional growth in light of the traumatic events of the last two years. The requested phonics and Words Their Way materials will help me better support the students in gaining the valuable reading and writing skills they missed when the schools shut down during their first-grade year. The novels will be used to build our classroom library for independent and shared reading experiences. During these reading experiences, we will explore themes, make connections, deepen our vocabulary, and expand our thought horizons. Through rich literature, we can discuss the ongoing social emotion needs of students as we examine how the characters in books handled challenging situations and rose above them. The math manipulatives, I have requested, will help my students develop critical problem solving and reasoning skills through hands-on activities. We will utilize them to explore how multiplication and division work together, develop a deeper understanding of place value, and explore the dimensions of elapsed time.
