In our 1st grade curriculum we use the Mystery Science program to support the NGSS/SEED science standards. This program offers outstanding lessons that allow students to discover the world around them by making observations, doing experiments, discussion, and coming to conclusions on their own. Many of these amazing lessons require hands-on activities that bring the learning to life, and each lesson has a list of materials students need that are often not reusable. By receiving these items, our students will able be to learn first hand answers to many of the curious questions of their young minds. For example, can a statue's shadow move, why are polar bears white, or why don't trees blow down in the wind? These items allow them to observe, explain, construct, and understand the world they live in, and their excitement for this learning is overwhelming. Additionally, because of our ELL/low SES population it is imperative that our students are given the background knowledge and vocabulary support they need to access the content we teach. Since the COVID-19 pandemic we have an even greater deficit in our students oral language and vocabulary. The literature we have requested is high quality and follows along with our weekly essential questions. Students are always excited to read these books that connect with what they are learning. They make connections between the text and their observations, and they are then able to directly apply this knowledge to a collaborative group STEAM task at the end of the week. In gaining this literature, we can promote greater integration within our curriculum and allow our students multiple exposures and practice with the academic language they need. Many of our students are language impoverished and we want to provide rich text that can be directly applied to their classroom learning.
