There are so many kids on so many levels in a kindergarten classroom that small group instruction is key to helping students learn. The problem is there are not enough adults around to provide it as often as it is needed. A listening center provides a story and a quiet independent center all in one. It allows students to listen to new stories, hold the copy in their hands, and discover how a book and story go together while I can give other students the help that they need. Stories also teach. The content they would listen to would be helping them learn and extend on topics we are learning about in our classroom.
