Students want to feel included and supported by their peers; however, there is a fear of rejection that typically prevents them from getting outside of their comfort zone on their own. Utilizing Social and Emotional Learning Escape boxes as catalysts for connection, will create a fun atmosphere conducive to student engagement and learning. Items purchased to make these Escape Boxes will provide the springboard that students need to overcome social anxiety by working together to solve the problems at hand. The skills learned and used will help students be successful inside and outside of the classroom. These Escape Boxes will provide ample opportunities to reflect on skills used during gameplay. Reflection by way of an after action report will allow for conversation about what worked and what could be improved for next time. One of the best things about Social and Emotional Escape Boxes is the feelings and emotions that are brought up. Sometimes it is excitement followed up with frustration. Sometimes it is joy through teamwork and accomplishment. Whatever the emotions are, we can work with students to recognize effective social and emotional control.
