This project is specifically designed to help my students experience the joy of static electricity and feel the hair-raising power of electrons charging each of their individual hairs. Students have such a difficult time understanding electric fields and how they work. the advantage of a Van De Graaff generator is that if used properly you can visualize electric field lines coming off of the generator and see how a build-up of charge can cause things to move. Having your hair stand up when you touch a Van De Graaf generator is always a great way to literally try hands-on science. The reason I am asking for two generators is so that I can share them with the other two science teachers that teach with me here.
