COVID-19 has presented the world of special education with unique challenges. Providing relating services, like what I do with occupational therapy, has also been particularly challenging. Kids with special needs and special health considerations have often had to learn from a distance, or with special precautions taken. This has required the use of more supplies in general, as many things (like theraputty, sensory bins, etc.) have to be thrown out when they can't be washed. Many other challenges have surfaced, including more students who present with sensory needs, and thus require the use of items like weighted lap pads, sensory sox, and tactile fidgets (like water beads and sensory bins). Kids with motor, sensory, and other impairments will benefit from the supplies being requested here, as all of these things are necessary tools to help the kids make progress with their independence at school. I have many students who have been forced to stay home from school due to medical concerns. These students present with concerns like Cerebral Palsy or other similar motor impairments, and struggle with activities that include self-feeding. The adapted utensils and drinking cups I've requested are to assist these students so they have the adapted feeding tools they need to gain greater independence in order to make their transition back to school an easier one. These students need to be able to access lunch activities at school, and tools are needed to help ease that transition. The other items I've requested including puzzles, diamond painting kits, fastener practice vests, shoe tying practice toys, and general fine motor toys are necessary to help all my students gain the fine motor skills they need to access the classroom. Many of these students lack these skills due to time away from the classroom and hectic pandemic life. Thank you!
