As a kindergarten teacher this academic year, I have noticed a profound lag in phonemic awareness and early letter skills with a large number of our students. We have slowed things down to meet our students where they are to help close the gap as quickly as possible to arm our students with early reading readiness. When we slow things down, it's good to be armed with an effective variety of activities to increase engagement. Students can make critical early reading skills connections when they learn them with a multi-sensory approach. The materials selected for this project will provide a variety of ways for students to engage with alphabet knowledge, phonemic awareness, and word-building and blending skills. The Launch and Learn Games target early phonemic and orthographic knowledge. Word building centers and tiles provide hand-on activities to reinforce segmenting and blending skills. Several of the games and activities requested target “CVC” word-building and decoding skills. These foundational tools will continue them on the path toward developing readers.
