My special needs classroom is very bare bones. We have few supplies, and we have no colored markers or other kinds of art supplies. Most of my students are economically disadvanteged and many have suffered trauma in the past. Using graphics and drawing can be a very important part of the ELA curriculum and having these supplies would allow my students the opportunity to show their creativity and understand concepts better. Most of my students have been diagnosed with ADHD or are on the autism spectrum, and they can be very fidgity and need to move a lot during class. I have no fidget toys or yoga balls, and having those will help to channel their movement energy into bouncing slightly in the yoga balls and using fidget toys to help calm them and soothe them. Also, many of my students can’t afford basic school supplies and having pencils, pens, and other supplies will save them from embarrassment. All of these things will help to benefit the lives of my students and make my work with them better and more fulfilling.
