Small manipulative materials are beneficial for use in providing tactile feedback when working on speech and language goals. Books are useful for having children practice fluency, accurate production of sounds in a higher level of difficulty, and to work on defining/describing with language goals. Blocks and other toys increase reinforcement and positive/tangible rewards. In order for students to make progress towards speech and language goals, multiple modalities such as books, manipulatives, and other materials are needed, and greatly increase impact, enjoyment, and progress when in speech therapy. Research has shown that play and fun during speech therapy sessions greatly increase neural connections.
