One of the biggest obstacles my students encounter is coming to school every day hungry. Skipping meals or not having adequate snacks throughout the day inhibits the students' ability to learn by distracting them from academic tasks, decreasing their motivation, and making them more irritable and less cooperative/patient with each other. Throughout the year, I've been trying to supply snacks for those that need them, but I can't afford to keep up with the amount they've been eating. Hungry students have a much more difficult time staying focused and learning new material in school. Even though what they eat or how often they eat is usually beyond their control, adequate consumption of food has profound effects on academic success. As their teacher, I do my best to make sure my students have their basic needs met and try to create a comfortable environment in my classroom so that my students are in the best frame of mind to learn.
