My students have emotional and sensory needs that must be met in order for them to be able to focus and learn. I have started to create a room with objects which focus on their needs. This room is set up to be a PT, OT, calm down room that can be used whenever the student needs a break to readjust then go back to class. My school has been able to use this room for more than just students with severe disabilities. I have had students that are struggling at home come in and work/play on some of the objects in the room, then return to class and have a much better day.
COVID has created a social-emotional need for my students to relearn how to work with other people when they don't want to. The spin boards are to help my students regulate the emotion and confusion that is happening in their heads. Several students NEED to move and wiggle while they focus on assignments so bands around the bottom of the chair legs will help with both wiggle and pressure.
With the object that I have requested my "calm down room" will better meet the emotional and sensory needs of the students in my class and in my school.
