Every year I ask my students what they want to learn the most. There is always a majority of the students that want to learn and do more Art! I have found that what they often mean is that they want to show how they feel. Students with mild to moderate disabilities are often at a disadvantage when showing what they have to contribute to their surroundings, especially at school. I hope to give them some joy in expressing who they are! Art is an expression of who we are and what we are going through. We should all be able to share this with passion and color. Starting with a pencil, then moving to color in small details, the students learn self-control and move on to a poster board to express emotion and feel with vibrant marker colors. These multiple projects combine to show self-control, delayed gratification, and imagination. These tools are excellent for growth in all aspects of life and learning.
