These resources for the art room will allow my students to create projects that help them express their individual point of view, as well as connecting them to the greater art world. Specifically, indigo dye projects connect students to traditional arts of Japan and India and how it is used today, as well as allowing students to see chemical reactions first hand. Clay provides students with opportunities to create useful 3D works (I have some students who thrive using this medium when little else sparks their interest). These other supplies will add extra oomph to our other projects. Many of my students do not have access to these supplies at home (or even basic art supplies), so my classroom is one of the few places they get to make art like this. Covid-19 denied these children these opportunities during the shutdowns, and I am seeking to make up lost time by planning extra special projects. Having these supplies will give my students more chances to explore using new materials, take chances (self-expression takes courage!), and develop resilience (a quality so needed during this pandemic) by learning new skills and visually seeing their own progress. As an added bonus, I tie much of my art instruction to what the students learn in the regular classroom, linking the arts to science, history, literacy and social studies.
